Key points

  • Severe or worsening headache, visual disturbances, and difficulty breathing require prompt evaluation.
  • Heavy bleeding, severe pain or fainting are not something to wait for.
  • In every emergency contact, say that you are pregnant or have recently given birth.

Why the postpartum period also counts

Serious complications are not limited to the maternity ward. ACOG warns of urgent maternal signs during pregnancy and postpartum. If you cannot reach your healthcare professional, you should go to the emergency room.

List week of pregnancy or due date, mode of delivery, known complications and medications.

Signs that require a quick reaction

It is not necessary to wait for more symptoms to appear. One serious or sudden sign is enough for assessment.

  • severe headache that does not go away or gets worse
  • visual disturbances, severe swelling of the face or hands
  • chest pain, fast heartbeat, or difficulty breathing
  • heavy bleeding, fainting or severe stomach pain
  • thoughts of harming themselves or the baby

Plan ahead

Save the number of the pregnancy team, arrange who can help with transport and tell a loved one what signs to take seriously.

For the above-mentioned urgent signs, contact a health professional immediately; if not available, go to the nearest emergency room.
